Start With the Coupon’s Original Terms and Conditions
A rejected code does not necessarily mean that the store has a technical problem. Often, a condition has not been met or is not fully shown in a list of codes copied from another website. Find the original official announcement or promotion page and read it before changing your cart. Terms may vary between stores and across campaigns from the same store.
First, check the exact validity period. It is not enough for the date to appear current: the offer may have a closing time, be limited to a specific period, or have ended according to the applicable time zone. Also check whether it is a single-use coupon, limited to one transaction, or already redeemed on your account. A code used previously may not be accepted again.
Read any stated usage limits carefully. Some promotions set restrictions per customer, order, or account. If the coupon comes from a message, account, or personalized promotion, confirm that it belongs to the account you are logged into. Do not assume that a code visible online is available to everyone or for every purchase.
- Check the offer’s official source, not just the text on a coupon website.
- Note the date, expiration time, and usage restrictions before changing items or trying again.
Verify That Your Cart Meets the Product and Seller Requirements
Review each item against the coupon description. A match in name or photo does not guarantee that a product is eligible. The offer may apply to a specific brand, variant, size, color, quantity, SKU, or category. A similar item, a different bundle, or a version with another capacity may be excluded even if it appears equivalent.
Look for exclusions as well. Phrases such as “selected items only,” “not valid on,” or “excluded” usually define the boundaries of the promotion. Possible exclusions include certain categories, gift cards, services, special orders, bundles, clearance items, brands, or specific products. The key is to check the wording of that particular offer, rather than assuming that all promotions follow the same rules.
In a marketplace, identify the actual seller of the item. The same product may be listed by several sellers on the same platform. If the promotion belongs to a particular seller, the product must be sold by that seller; having the order fulfilled or shipped by the platform does not by itself mean the coupon is valid. Review this information item by item if your cart includes multiple sellers.
- Compare the coupon description with the product listing, including the variant and quantity.
- If an item has multiple sellers, confirm which one is associated with the product you added.

Calculate the Minimum Correctly and Review Combined Promotions
If the coupon requires a minimum purchase amount, find out which amount it uses as its basis. It may count only eligible items and exclude taxes, shipping, service, handling, or gift-wrapping charges. As a result, the total shown in the cart does not always match the amount that the promotion considers eligible.
Check whether another discount has reduced the amount of eligible items below the minimum. An automatic discount, an existing markdown, or a category offer may change the calculation basis. It may also be that one of the products in the cart is not eligible and, once excluded, the remaining amount no longer reaches the required threshold.
Do not assume that discounts can be combined. Some offers allow only one code per order, while others cannot be used with sale prices, gifts with purchase, category promotions, or other incentives. Read whether the promotion specifies combination rules and apply the code in the order indicated by the store, if instructions are provided.
- Try temporarily removing other codes or promotions and review the order summary.
- Calculate the minimum using only the items identified as eligible by the coupon.
Confirm the Purchase Channel and Redemption Timing
A coupon may be restricted to the website, app, physical store, pickup, or home delivery. Also check whether there are conditions regarding the destination, geographic area, all eligible items being in the same transaction, or shipping to a single address. Check the terms expressly stated for that promotion.
Enter the code in the designated field and confirm that the discount appears in the order summary before paying. Do not complete the order assuming it will be applied later. Some policies require redemption during checkout and do not allow discounts to be added to completed transactions.
Even if the coupon is accepted, review the final cost. Check the total including taxes, shipping, service fees, and any other displayed charges. The discount is only one part of the outcome: the purchase decision should be based on the final amount and the terms of the offer.
- Before paying, confirm that the discount appears in the summary and that the selected channel and delivery terms meet the promotion’s requirements.
- Compare the final cost, not just the coupon’s apparent value.

If the Code Still Does Not Work, Document and Isolate the Cause
Work methodically: change only one variable at a time and check the summary again. For example, remove a potentially excluded item, replace a variant, remove another code, or review the seller. If you make several changes at once, it will be harder to determine which condition caused the rejection.
Save screenshots of the offer and its terms, the cart contents, the error message, and the order summary. Also keep the seller details, amount, applicable policies, and related communications. This information makes it easier to explain the issue precisely if you need help.
If you cannot find the reason, contact the store’s customer service and ask them to identify the specific condition preventing redemption. Frame your inquiry with the information you collected: the code, products, seller, delivery method, eligible-item amount, and message received. This will help you make a more informed decision about whether to change the purchase or discard the promotion.
- Do not complete the purchase assuming the discount will be added retroactively.
- Ask for a specific explanation of the unmet condition rather than simply stating that the coupon does not work.
